October 4: Courage Has a Human Face: When Ordinary People Do Extraordinary Things

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes it is a child taking the first frightening step, a neighbor refusing to abandon another, a community rebuilding after a disaster, or an ordinary person deciding that fear will not have the final word. Through stories of children and adults, ancestors and contemporary witnesses, individuals and whole communities, we will explore the humanity behind courage—the fear, doubt, sacrifice, love and hope that make bravery possible. Perhaps courage is not the absence of fear at all, but learning that we never have to face our fears alone.
