Bread, Roses and Dignity: The Courage of Working People

Before there were victories, there were people willing to risk something. Farmworkers bent beneath the sun. Domestic workers labored unseen in other people’s homes. Sanitation workers carried signs declaring “I AM A MAN.” Teachers, restaurant workers, miners, nurses, organizers and union members stood together demanding dignity, safety, respect and enough wages to live. Some lost jobs. Some were beaten or jailed. Some lost their lives. This Sunday we remember that social change is rarely handed down—it is often pushed forward by ordinary people discovering the courage to stand together. Their struggle asks us: What is human dignity worth, and what are we willing to do for one another?
